How to Cure Sadness at Holiday Season

B'SD

2 Kislev 5772

Hey, that high-stepping turkey looks happier than some of the people who survived this part of the holiday season. Somehow, holidays don't seem all that bright and cheerful when you're mourning the memories of loved ones no longer able to celebrate them with you.

Hanuka doesn't even look bright despite all those pretty candles.

Xmas and Kwanzaa seem to just bring you down with a sense of sadness and emptiness. But consider this: those holidays are about spiritual realities after all.
How about letting them help you?

Do yourself a favor. Look at this recreation of today's

Triple-header today. Let's solve some of those mysterious maladies with one click on this Alternatively Speaking article.

Okay, that was easy enough. But what if you follow the above suggestions and still experience those late-night Charlie-horses/leg cramps? A-g-o-n-y, right?

If you suffer leg cramps and you're not pregnant (but even if you are), see the Coping with Pain chapter (it begins on page 32) of

There's a lot more problem-solving between the covers of the E-book and print edition. Order yours at

One more thought before I sign off today. I was at a meeting yesterday, in which psychologist Eli Shine informed business women about techniques for having more success in life. I was startled to hear him announce that a specific idea/premise he'd mentioned is found in EMPOWER Yourself! What an endorsement! We'd never met before.

I chatted with Eli after the meeting to let him know that there's one dynamite sentence for success in a forthcoming article I've written for MISHPACHA magazine's December 7 edition. He agreed with a BIG smile. Read it and let me know your thoughts about that ;^ D

Craniosacral Therapy Opens Healing Possibilities!

B'SD

18 Cheshvan 18 5772

One of the remarkable events of my healing journey concerns the eyelid paralyzed by life-saving brain surgery. Yes, the surgeon removed the benign tumor crushing my optic nerves and all the others caught in its hold. But the experience traumatized my body. It left me weak, in need of physical, speech and occupational therapy. And I needed to see again.

My entire medical team knew I could see only glimmers. And, those medical professionals predicted that the glimmer would fade to black, forever. They expected me to be blind lifelong. None of them seemed especially concerned at the paralyzed eyelid that would otherwise block my view. But as you read EMPOWER Yourself to Cope with a Medical Challenge you’ll learn how I revved up my motivation to be as functional as possible with the life left before me. That motivation included lifting the eyelid with nerves too weak to make it rise or even to flicker a bit.

I went for craniosacral therapy from a practitioner trained by a leader in the field, John Upledger himself. That practitioner, Andrea/Chana Bracha Kornfeld, quickly made my craniosacral fluids move in a more optimal fashion (CSF fills our spinal cords and surrounds our brains, helping them to function). The once paralyzed eyelid fluttered open, though at half mast. With further treatment, we watched it rise to an increasingly normal position. Today, few people can detect the slightly off-kilter position of the rather normal-looking oval.

Andrea/Chana Bracha and I worked together for months to promote other healing. My skull, damaged by surgery, regained strength, correct positioning and – years after the surgical event – healthy new bone!

I’ve watched Andrea/Chana Bracha and other craniosacral practitioners effect miraculous results in babies, children and adults of all ages. The process is rather pleasant. The patient sits comfortably or lies upon a treatment table as the craniosacral therapist (CST) lightly touches them to promote the improved flow of the CS fluids.

Not every medical procedure needs to be painful or frightening. Want to learn about other medical miracles you or a loved can benefit from? Read

How to Have a Happier Holiday Season - Even if You're Ill

B'SD

10 Cheshvan 5772

How is It’s MY Crisis! And I’ll Cry If I Need To: EMPOWER Yourself to Cope with a Medical Challenge different from other self-help, inspirational books? Because of the author who wrote it.

I don’t play “Holier than you” games nor do I pretend that all will sweet if only you follow the suggestions in the book. What I have done from cover to cover, is to acknowledge the pain, confusion and anger that go with illness. Then I share practical, proven ways to “Face Your Medical Problems with Dignity. Face Your Future with Optimism.” Different chapters show you how to tame the insurance and medical paperwork monster, how to remember every medical appointment and medication (including what they’re for!); even the names of all the doctors involved in your medical care or your loved one’s.

I added humorous takes on life throughout the E-book and print edition, including a “knock ‘em flat” response to critics who insist you have no right to cry "... because G’D only gives what we can handle” (ever heard of a nervous breakdown? Death? Lifelong disabilities? The need to recover from a setback?). They and I let you laugh so you can restore your sense of perspective, your zest for life AND your better self to the overall picture. You might even end up feeling better about G'D!

There’s a reason that medical and mental health professionals recommend

One of them even saved his life with it! Another gives it to patients on chemotherapy and to addicts in rehab. “They don’t call me much after that,” he chuckles. “They feel better just reading the book!”

I’m different from other authors in the medical, self-help and inspirational genre because I’m honest about what it takes to cope with harsh reality and end up smiling. No white-washing with me. Just solid stress-busting information proven to work over time, plus time-saving leads to the cost-cutting information ill people need.

Get someone (including yourself!) a great gift for the holiday season. Let them learn how to enjoy it more, and at all, when they read

The back cover of

holds praise from medical and mental health professionals.

I was delighted to click on one of my Facebook pages today to see this praise from a newer reader of EMPOWER Yourself, another medical professional who has communicated her personal appreciation of the book to  me in the past:

Yocheved Golani has written
a comprehensive manual for
the ill and those helping
the person experiencing a medical crisis.
Her approach is compassionate and
filled with messages of
hope and universal faith.

I found the book pro-active, not reactive.

In Ms. Golani’s encouragement to use
positive language, she enables a reader
to look at their circumstance
as a point of growth.

She has productive exercises
for the reader,
using one’s own words to
approach a medical crisis
(or chronic illness) is going to
last much longer than the
“you should” messages
so many ill people face.

The list of resources is a commodity!
Whew, everyone experiencing illness
should have access
to this comprehensive list -
it’s action oriented, for sure.

Ultimately, the most endearing
and enduring message
one can receive from this book is:
Medical crisises may happen,
but who you are,
how you manage -
it’s in your hands.

Pick up this book and be
your own best advocate!
~ Shoshana Kesner, DHM, BSN

Healing and Coping with a Giggle

B'SD

23 Tishrei 5772

It's been an exiting start to the new Jewish year! Here's a photo of me in Shilo, the site of the ancient tabernacle (Mishkan in Hebrew) this past week.

Friends and I enjoyed lovely holiday times, company and meals. Here and there someone wept to me about the sadness of a diagnosis or life situation, asking how to cope with life's harsher side. Among other things, I gently explained the wisdom of seeking out pleasure, promoting pleasure and nurturing that Inner Giggle all of us. We yearn to laugh, to be free of worry and fear. By taking on life with a sense of humor, we let ourselves relax, grow courageous, insightful and stronger. Those are coping skills!

Click on this sample of what I mean: The world's first-ever senior citizen LipDub! Residents from Clark Retirement Community in Grand Rapids, Michigan teamed up with Grand Valley State University Film & Video Production students, alumni, and professors to create this sassy video to the jazzy 1965 hit song ‘Feeling Good’ by Michael Bublé. (Hat tip for the video to my good friend Jesica Myers)

FYI on Sukot, Wheelchair Accessibility in Barcelona and Easy Reading!

B'SD

14 Tishrei 5772

YAY, tonight is the start of the weeklong Sukot holiday, when Jews thank The One Above for getting us through the desert after slavery in Egypt. Miracle after miracle is celebrated while we dine and sleep in specially prepared huts/booths. Read this Sukot FYI  & this one, From Fasting to Feasting.

Back to day-to-day concerns, consider what it's like for a person in a wheelchair to move about in a foreign location (let alone at home!). Alan Broadbent participates on a LinkedIn group for people with disabilities. He posted information about wheelchair-accessible Barcelona. I asked him if I may share the item on this blog. Alan graciously replied, "Please feel free to share information with anyone via your blog, twitter, facebook etc."

FREE! Barcelona, A Wheelchair Users Guide now available for pdf download
Barcelona, A Wheelchair Users Guide is a 'warts & guide to Barcelona covering such issues as travelling from the airport into the City, eating out, money, touring, hotel accommodation and much more. This 10 page guide is available for free at the moment in pdf format. For people using screen readers I have the guide available using the DaisyPipeline software so hopefully a download should work fairly easily, ditto a version is available for download that can be printed in braille, both these last options are experimental on my part at the moment. When the EPUB ebook version goes live next month the others will no longer be available free and those versions will be sold at a nominal fee to cover admin time. Email me at wtm@disabledaccessibletravel.com for a copy.

Read up on the etiquette tips for interaction with people who use wheelchairs in a very affordable book! They'll appreciate you for that! Buy the E-book or print edition of EMPOWER Yourself to Cope with a Medical Challenge so you and everyone else can...

Catch Up on Medical Care Options Worldwide!

B'SD

13 Tishrei 5772

Whew, I've been on the road this past week, living out of a suitcase and with little to zero access to a computer. Let's catch up with each other!

The New York Times has an interesting article entitled Trying Out New Ways to Deliver Healthcare. I'm interested to know your thoughts about it. So far, I foresee benefits for people who won't have to:

Travel back to a medical office to receive
a "Yes" or "No" answer

Receive a slip of VERY important paperwork, or

Promote better communication among several
medical practitioners involved in that person's
healthcare.

Potential drawbacks can develop, too. So can better care. It's an interesting mix of possibilities. Just like life...

Back here in Israel, we're facing quite a medical challenge of our own: a strike by medical residents. Israel's Ministry of Health needs to straighten this out pronto!

No matter what the medical challenge my readers are facing - anywhere in the world, many medical and mental professionals agree that you can affordably and sensibly
